Flame Retardant Print E-mail

Innovative Polymers' flame retardant systems include products in the Rapid Cast, Fast Cure Polyurethanes, High Performance Polyurethanes and Vacuum Assisted Casting Polyurethanes families. Formulated for prototyping, initial parts and low-volume production, the easy-to-handle materials are ideal for casting medical devices, equipment housings, automotive components and electronic parts. Specific flame retardant polyurethanes in the Innovative Polymers line include:

Rapid Cast, Fast Cure Polyurethanes gel very quickly requiring dispensing via automated meter/mix equipment. The materials can be demolded in 10 to 30 minutes for most parts. Among the flame retardant polyurethanes in this product family are:

  • RC-79D is an amber colored system with a Shore 85D hardness, flexural modulus of 325,000 psi and heat deflection temperature of 189ºF (87ºC). It has a UL 94 V-O flammability rating with a yellow card.
  • RC-515 is a black, high heat material that passes UL 94 V-O requirements for use at elevated temperatures up to 230ºF (110ºC). The cured product has a very high, 450,000 psi flexural modulus and a Shore hardness of 80D.
  • RC-542 is an ultra-low viscosity, buff colored product with a very fast, 40 second gel time. It is a UL 94 V-O system with a yellow card. The cured material has a Shore hardness of 75D, flexural modulus of 240,000 psi and heat deflection temperature of 183ºF (84ºC).

High Performance Polyurethanes are Shore D hardness materials formulated to simulate TPO, ABS and PC thermoplastics. For flame retardant applications, Innovative Polymers has introduced a new system based on advanced crosslinked technologies:

  • TP-4014 is an amber colored system that meets UL 94 V-O standards for use in casting equipment housings, automotive interior components and under-hood parts. The polyurethane has a 12.5 minute gel time. Once cured, it has a Shore hardness of 65D, a high notched Izod impact strength of 3.0 ft-lb/in, a flexural modulus of 150,000 psi and a heat deflection temperature of 192ºF (89ºC).

Vacuum Assisted Casting Polyurethanes feature low viscosities and rapid green strength for vacuum casting of void-free prototypes and parts. A flame retardant addition to the Innovative Polymers vacuum casting line is:

  • VA-259 is a white system with a seven minute gel time. It is flame retardant with a yellow card for use in vacuum casting electronic parts and medical device components. The cured material has a Shore hardness of 85D, flexural modulus of 330,000 psi and heat deflection temperature of 186ºF (85ºC).
